All artificial football pitches must be tested to ASTM standard F1936 to ensure they are no posing unnecessary risk to users and reflect the characteristics of a natural pitch as closely as possible.

Gmax & HIC (Head Impact Criterion) replicate the momentum of a players head (HIC) or torso (gmax) when it collides with the playing surface. Testing measures the force the player is exposed to – the harder the surface, the higher the force returned and therefore higher the gmax/HIC rating. ASTM require no surface to have a greater gmax rating than 200g’s in any of the 10 testing locations to be deemed safe for use.
