Gmax testing is carried out in Scottsdale, Arizona to ascertain the performance characteristics of an artificial or natural grass playing surface. Gmax testing is a measurement of impact attenuation, carried out in line with ASTM standards.

Surface Performance use a specialist ASTM F355 A-Missile Measurement Tester to calculate the gmax rating. There is a accelerometer inside the 20lb missile, upon impact it measures the impact attenuation of the playing surface. Put simply, this measures the force absorbed by the surface and what is transferred back to the player.
