Measuring the gmax rating of artificial and natural playing surfaces in Carmel, California

Gmax and HIC testing are designed to replicate a players torso and head, measuring the force exerted on them upon impact with the playing surface. If a surface is too hard then it would return excessive force back to the athlete, increasing the risk of injury or concussion to an unacceptable level. Any surface with a gmax rating above 200g’s would be deemed unfit for use, according to ASTM F1936.

Gmax and HIC testing should be carried out at least twice per year to effectively monitor surface conditions and player safety.
