It is estimated that 10-15% of concussions in football are due to head-to-surface impact. It is therefore crucial to measure the magnitude of force involved in these impacts, which is the direct result of the impact attenuation of the surface. Gmax and HIC (Head Impact Criterion) are the most recognized tests focused on the magnitude of impact exposed to athletes. Gmax testing replicated a players torso whilst the HIC replicates a players head, these two tests coupled up are the most recognised way of certifying a pitch as safe for use according to ASTM F1936.
