Impact attenuation of artificial surfaces in Walpi, Arizona

Surface Performance Gmax testing in Walpi, Arizona measures two things, absorption and impact. A 20lb missile is dropped in 10 locations on the field, three drops per location. The missle measure G forces upon impact which provides Gmax values for the surface. No surface should have a higher gmax rating than 200g’s.

A high gmax rating shows a surface which doesn’t absorb sufficient impact therefore returns too much force to the user upon impact. This would increase the risk of injury or concussion. Gmax testing should therefore be carried out annually to ensure player safety is closely monitored.
