The current most widely recognized test in respect to the safety of a playing surface is a gmax test. A gmax test uses an accelerometer inside a 20lb missile to measure the surface hardness, this is reported as a gmax rating. ASTM standard require surfaces to have a gmax rating below 200g’s to be safe for use. The higher the gmax value, the harder the surface and higher the shock attenuation.

A gmax test measures the shock absorbed by a players torso not their head. To measure head impact a HIC (Head Injury Criterion) test would be required.
