Gmax and HIC have become fundamental tests in respect to player safety on artificial and natural playing surfaces. Both tests concentrate on the moment of impact between the player and the surface. The impact upon collision is absorbed by either the surface or the player, the surface must be of high enough standard to absorb sufficient impact and protect the player.

Gmax focuses on a players torso whilst HIC (Head Injury Criterion) focuses on a players head.
